St. Mary's Ruins and Pluckley Village
Walkabout Investigation, 20th September, 2008

Report written by Bob with contributions from Sue.

Group: Sarah, Sue, Dawn, Bob, Keef, Bryn, Keith and Jen.

The ruins of St. Mary's Church

This church was built in various stages between the 13th and 16th centuries.
During the 18th century it began to fall into disrepair but was restored during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The church was reduced to ruins on the 16th August 1944 by a German V1 (Flying Bomb) which had been shot down en-route to its target in London.
No one was killed by the explosion.

This site is now maintained by Ashford Council in association with English Heritage and The Rural Development Commission.

After having gone the scenic route (a euphemism for having got lost after following a road sign) we finally arrived at the ruins of St. Mary's at Little Chart, fortunately Sarah had remembered the correct route to take.
Note: for future trips - ignore road signs, take a map and Bryn's Sat. Nav!

Pictured right - a view of the moon on the night, a little bit blurred due to the camera being hand-held.

Sue and a few others thought the site's appearance had changed since our last visit, the nearby houses seemed more visible and the car park was felt to have shrunk?

Sue's first feelings were different from that of previous visits, this time she felt slightly uneasy and a little bit on-edge, nothing dramatic, no bad spirits or anything like that, but there was something just not right.
On previous trips, she felt it had been quite peaceful and tranquil, even so on both of those occasions there had still been plenty of "activity".

In what remains of the tower, the side-door was found to have been forced open. As we do not trespass, nobody entered the tower and Bob closed the door which was found to be sticking on the step. Keef placed his beam alarm in front of this door and it was asked for it to be opened whilst we were elsewhere as it was felt, by some, that the activity in this area was particularly strong.

Following a brief exploration of the entire site, we had some refreshments before commencing.

Several of the group were convinced there was a wooden door in the main doorway aperture of the tower on our last visit, Bob and Keith even described it as having black metal studs, but later examination of photos from two years ago revealed there wasn't.

For the purposes of this report, the position of individual locations are described from the perspective of standing and facing the ruins with the road behind.

Sue, who was near the rear left-hand corner of the tower, got the impression of a group of people coming up the bank and being led by an elderly couple, Sue felt the woman was named "Eliza" but she couldn't make out the man by her side.
Initially Sue sensed this may have been a funeral procession but later felt this wasn't so.

From their attire, Sue described this group as working people, perhaps farmers. "Eliza" had something on her head, possibly a shawl or scarf. The entire group looked dishevelled with dirty marks on their faces and hands. Sue got the impression that they were all in a state of of shock, disbelief and sadness, she felt they were asking "How could this have happened".
It was then realised that Sue was stood near to the remains of a doorway into what would have been the main body of the church. Bryn felt this particular area was "very busy".
Sue concluded "Eliza" was 60 - 65 years of age and the time period was probably around WWII.
Sue also heard the mention of a "George", she thought another team member had said it but, when asked, no one admitted doing so.

21:24
We relocated to the far rear of the churchyard, in the right-hand corner, where an EVP session was commenced.
Later examination of this audio recording revealed nothing out-of-the-ordinary.
Sue sensed various presences in the immediate vicinity, possibly five, they seemed curious as to what we were doing but didn't seem to want to come too close. It felt as if they were circling the group but then seemed to just fade away into the background.

21:28
Sue sensed a male and, at roughly the same time, Keith saw a single pin-prick of light.
This male presence also faded away, more or less, as soon as he became apparent.
Sue also heard what she described as heavy breathing.

21:30
Most of the group sensed something was moving around them but was keeping its distance.
Dawn reported having an intense headache.
Jen, through the camcorder, registered a brief mist moving across the ground which was visible on and off for approximately one minute, the camcorder also had difficulty maintaining its focus. This was shortly followed by a single light anomaly.

21:32
A bright light anomaly was captured on video, looking in the direction of the ruins, and again around a minute later, the camcorder also had difficulty maintaining its focus during this period.

21:33
Another EVP session was commenced but, again, nothing out-of-the-ordinary was evident.
Sue saw a large white light move across the tower ruins but soon realised it had probably been caused by the headlights of a passing car.

21:35
Sarah briefly detected an odour which she compared to the smell of copper pipes.
Another EVP session was commenced during which some of the group heard laughter, this however was not evident on the recording.
